The Gift of Asking for Help
He said, “How can I, unless someone explains it to me?” He begged Philip to come up and sit with him.
The Ethiopian eunuch was reading Scripture, yet he knew he couldn't fully grasp its meaning on his own. Rather than pretending to understand or giving up in frustration, he honestly admitted his need and invited Philip to sit with him. That simple, humble response opened the door to a conversation that changed his life.
There's something freeing in this example. Many of us feel pressure to appear as though we already have it all figured out, especially when it comes to matters of faith. But the eunuch's question reminds us that spiritual understanding was never meant to be a solo pursuit. Scripture often becomes clearer when it's studied alongside others who can offer insight, ask good questions, and share their own journey of faith.
If you're new to Christianity, or if you grew up in the church but still find yourself puzzled by certain passages, there is no shame in asking for help. Seeking out community Bible study isn't a sign of weakness or spiritual immaturity - it's often exactly how understanding is meant to grow. Just as Philip came alongside the eunuch, others can come alongside us, and we can do the same for someone else.
Consider who in your life might serve as a "Philip" for you right now, someone who could study alongside you, answer questions, or simply sit with you in the reading. And consider, too, who might need you to extend that same invitation to them.
