Jesus Bought Your Endurance
Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
At the table with his disciples, Jesus took the cup and spoke of a new covenant sealed not with ceremony but with his own blood. This was no small transaction. In that moment, he was securing something for his people that they could never secure for themselves: a promise that would hold them fast to the very end.
It's easy to think of the cross as covering only our past failures, wiping the slate clean for sins already committed. But the new covenant Jesus announced that night reaches further. His blood, poured out for us, purchased not just forgiveness but perseverance—the very endurance believers need to keep trusting, keep hoping, keep following him through every season of life.
This means our staying power in the faith is not ultimately a matter of our own willpower or spiritual stamina. It rests on what Christ accomplished. God's covenant promise, sealed in that cup, ensures that his people will not ultimately turn away. Our continuing in faith is itself a fruit of his finished work, not a condition we must somehow generate on our own.
There is deep comfort here for anyone who feels weary or unsure they'll make it to the end. The cup Jesus lifted was a pledge—his blood for your endurance, his covenant for your perseverance. You are held not by your grip on him, but by his grip on you, secured at great cost.
