Love That Shows Up
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
Jesus was asked which commandment mattered most, and his answer began with the heart, soul, and mind directed wholly toward God. This is the foundation of everything else in the Christian life. Before any act of service or kindness, there is first this call to love God completely, with the whole of who we are.
But love for God rarely stays contained to private devotion. It moves outward, shaping how we see our neighbors and our cities. When our hearts are truly oriented toward God, that love naturally overflows into concern for people who are hurting, hot, hungry, or in need of care.
We see a picture of this overflow in the work of Love Thy City, a Christian nonprofit in Tyler, Texas. At a recent community event, the organization distributed more than 100 air conditioning units and served over 7,000 people with free groceries, health services, and spiritual support. In a place where summer heat can be dangerous and basic needs go unmet, this kind of practical generosity becomes a tangible expression of love for God lived out toward others.
There is something quietly powerful about an AC unit delivered to a family in need, or a bag of groceries handed over with no strings attached. These are small things by themselves, but they carry the weight of a much larger love, one that begins in the heart and mind's devotion to God and refuses to stop there. Loving God with all we are naturally leads us to notice and respond to the needs around us.
