A New Name, A Long Line

Ezra 7:1 (WEB)
Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

The opening of Ezra 7 marks a turning point in the story. Time has passed, a new king sits on the Persian throne, and a new figure steps onto the scene: Ezra. Before we learn anything about what Ezra will do, we learn who he is—his identity is traced back through a chain of names, generation after generation, rooting him in a specific family and a specific priestly heritage.

This kind of genealogy can be easy to skim past, but it says something important. Ezra doesn't appear out of nowhere. He's connected to those who came before him, carrying forward a legacy that stretches back through history. His story is part of a much longer story that God has been writing all along, across generations and through the changing rule of empires and kings.

There's something steadying in this reminder. The people of God don't live disconnected, isolated lives—each person's story is woven into a larger narrative that God is patiently unfolding over time. Just as Ezra's identity was shaped by those who came before him, our own faith often stands on the shoulders of people who were faithful long before we arrived on the scene.

It's also worth noticing that this new chapter begins simply with "after these things"—a quiet transition marking that God's work continues even during the gaps and pauses we don't always see or understand. History moves forward, kings change, and yet God's purposes keep unfolding.
