When Your Own Understanding Runs Out
Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.
There are moments in life when the path we've built for ourselves collapses, and we're left with nothing but the wreckage of our own plans. In those moments, Scripture calls us to a different kind of security—not confidence in what we've figured out on our own, but wholehearted trust in God himself.
Jose Rosales knew a version of that collapse. From the age of eight he was shaped by a world where being a gangster meant being a man, and by twelve he was already cycling in and out of jail. His own understanding, and the understanding handed down to him, had charted a course that led straight to a twenty-year prison sentence. It was a system of thinking that made sense within its own world, but it left him bound.
What changed wasn't a clever plan or a shift in his own reasoning. It was hearing the gospel clearly, almost by accident, in a jail chapel service he only attended for a Christmas card. Something outside his own understanding broke in. Four years later he sought out the man whose voice had taught him in prison—a small but telling picture of someone no longer leaning on himself, but reaching toward truth that came from beyond him.
That's the quiet invitation of trusting God with all your heart: setting down the understanding that has only ever led you in circles, and letting something greater take hold. It doesn't erase the past or the years lost, but it opens a door to a freedom that self-reliance never could.
