Before the Law, a Voice

Leviticus 18:1 (WEB)
Yahweh said to Moses,

Before any instruction is given, something simpler happens first: God speaks. The chapter that follows is dense with commands about sexual ethics, holiness, and how Israel is to live differently than the nations around them, but none of it starts with a rulebook. It starts with a relationship, with Yahweh addressing Moses directly.

That order matters. It's easy to approach Leviticus 18 and feel buried under its specifics, wondering what ancient holiness codes have to do with life today. But the chapter's weight rests on its opening word, that this is God speaking, not an abstract list of taboos. The commands that follow are meant to be heard as the voice of a God who has already claimed this people as his own.

For Christians reading these laws now, the question isn't simply "what do we do with these rules," but "what do they reveal about the character of the one speaking them." Holiness, in this light, isn't an arbitrary boundary line. It's an invitation into the kind of life that reflects who God is, something Sam and Will trace through Leviticus into care for the poor, love of neighbor, Sabbath rest, and the Year of Jubilee, all the way to how Jesus fulfills it.

Even a single line like "Yahweh said to Moses" reminds us that Scripture isn't just ancient instruction, it's ongoing address. God still speaks into the particulars of how we live, love, and treat one another. If you want to sit longer with what these holiness laws mean for us today, and how they ultimately point toward Jesus, check out The Bible Show's episode "Ep. 116. Leviticus 07 - What Do Leviticus' Holiness Laws Mean for Christians?" for the fuller conversation.
