Losing the Battle Before It Starts

Matthew 26:31 (WEB)
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

Jesus told His closest friends plainly that the night ahead would shake them. They would stumble, scatter, and fail—not because the prophecy demanded it, but because that's what happens to hearts unprepared for pressure. It's easy to read this and think of Peter's denial as a sudden, shocking collapse. But Pastor Robby Gallaty points out something worth sitting with: the fall didn't begin at the fire in the courtyard. It began earlier, in a garden, with eyes closed in sleep instead of open in prayer.

We like to imagine our failures are isolated moments—a single bad decision under sudden pressure. But Gallaty's reflection on this passage suggests otherwise. Peter's undoing was set in motion long before the servant girl ever pointed a finger at him. A self-centered monologue of confidence, paired with a prayerless heart, left him defenseless when the real test came. He thought he was ready because he felt strong. He wasn't ready because he hadn't prepared the one place that mattered.

This is a sobering pattern to recognize in ourselves. How often do we walk into our own version of "tonight"—a hard conversation, a tempting moment, a weary season—confident in our own resolve, having skipped the quiet place of prayer? Jesus's words to His disciples weren't meant to shame them but to warn them: stumbling is what happens when we substitute self-reliance for dependence on God. The scattering wasn't random; it was the natural outcome of unreadiness.

There's mercy woven into this warning, though. Jesus didn't say this to abandon His disciples to failure—He said it knowing full well what would come after: restoration. The same is true for us. Recognizing where we are prone to sleep instead of pray is not a condemnation; it's an invitation to wake up before the test arrives, not during it.

If this truth stirs something in you, Robby Gallaty unpacks it further in his message "Why You're Losing the Battle Before It Even Starts (Stop Sleeping)," tracing how Peter's fall unfolded and what it teaches us about staying spiritually awake today.
