Ask and Expect

James 1:5 (WEB)
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

Wisdom is something only God possesses in full, yet he graciously makes it available to us. It isn't something we can manufacture on our own, nor something we can earn through effort or merit. It comes only as a gift, freely given by God to those who ask him for it.

This means the posture we bring matters. Wisdom flows toward humility, not pride. It comes to those who recognize their own smallness before God, who trust his thoughts above their own, and who are willing to think in ways that may seem foolish by human standards but are actually rooted in God's truth. The proud and self-assured tend to miss it, while the humble and teachable receive it.

The good news tucked into this verse is how generously God gives. He doesn't ration wisdom out grudgingly or make us prove we deserve it first. He gives liberally, without finding fault, to anyone who comes asking in genuine need. That's an invitation to approach him with confidence rather than hesitation.

So when you find yourself lacking wisdom for a decision, a relationship, or simply how to navigate the day, the instruction is straightforward: ask. And ask expecting an answer, trusting that God delights to give what he has promised.
