Ordinary Vessels, Persuasive Truth

1 Corinthians 1:26 (WEB)
For you see your calling, brothers, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, and not many noble;

Paul reminds the Corinthian church to look honestly at who they are. Most of them were not the wise, the powerful, or the well-born of their society. This wasn't a discouragement but an invitation to see how God works—often through the overlooked and unremarkable to display something greater than human credentials could ever achieve.

There's a quiet comfort in this truth. We don't need impressive resumes or natural eloquence for God to use us. The calling itself carries the weight, not the qualifications we bring to it. This reorients how we think about influence and effectiveness in the kingdom—it was never meant to rest on worldly standards of wisdom or status.

Interestingly, this truth about God's methods connects to something those who teach and preach must also wrestle with: how do you communicate truth in a way that actually reaches people? Not through impressive credentials, but through clear, well-ordered reasoning that helps listeners follow along rather than get lost. Even Paul, who could reason with the best philosophers of his day, understood that clarity and careful arrangement of thought matter when presenting truth—not to rely on human wisdom, but to serve the listener well.

This is part of what makes preaching both humble and purposeful work. The preacher isn't trying to impress with brilliance, but to arrange truth clearly enough that ordinary people—not many wise, not many mighty, not many noble—can grasp it and be transformed by it. The content itself carries divine power; the task of communication is simply to remove unnecessary obstacles.

If you're curious how ancient wisdom about persuasion can serve this very goal of clear, faithful communication, Crossway's piece "How to Arrange Your Sermon in the Most Persuasive Way Possible" offers some thoughtful, practical guidance worth exploring further.
