What Is a Postil? Living Margin Notes on Scripture
A postil is an old word for a note in the margin of Scripture — teaching written beside the text so the Bible and the sermon stay in the same place. Reformers used postils so readers weren't left alone with a difficult verse and a stack of unrelated books.
Postil (the app) brings that idea into a phone you already carry. When you open a verse, you can see living postils: sermons, articles, and podcasts from ministries across the evangelical and Reformed world, tagged to the Scripture they actually teach. The note isn't frozen in a study-Bible copyright year. It updates as new teaching lands.
Margin notes, not another Christian homepage
Most Bible apps stop at the text. Most Christian apps stop at a feed of articles, videos, and news. Neither habit answers the question you're asking when you stare at a hard passage: what have faithful teachers said about this verse?
Verse-linked teaching does. Tap the verse. See the teaching. Jump into the full episode or article if you want depth — or keep reading with the margin still in view.
What you'll find beside a verse
- Real creators and ministries you can recognize, from Desiring God and The Gospel Coalition to smaller independent teachers — voices in the orbit, not a claim that every one is a formal Postil Partner
- Multiple formats: sermon audio, long articles, video teaching
- A full Bible reader with translations, notes, highlights, and reading plans — free to browse on iPhone
Human-reviewed daily devotionals in Postil also point back to a real verse and a real piece of teaching — never invented from nothing.
